East London-based comedian Matthew Osborn, 33, is set to come to the Harlow Playhouse for Live At The Playhouse 2014. The former winner of English Comedian of the year talks psychosis, cleaning cars and near misses with bottles.

How did you get into comedy?

I just fancied giving it a go, I thought it would be interesting. I went around the open mic spots in London and just progressed from there.

Where was your first gig?

On the Essex Road, Islington, opposite a taxidermist. I was about 23.

What was the first gig like?

It was a very intimidating place, a biker bar. I wondered whether I could do it, I could, unfortunately it was the next one that went badly. No-one laughed.

How would you describe your comedy?

Dry one-liners linked together in a narrative. I like to think I’m giving people a lecture. It’s clear I don’t know anything, I’m an idiot, but I think I know about the world.

What did you do before you got into comedy?

I was at university in Exeter.

What makes you laugh?

The Mighty Boosh. I like silly comedy.

What’s your biggest bug-bear?

People telling you about themselves. A bit like what I’m doing now. When you meet people and they endlessly tell you about their lives and achievements. It happens all the time. Maybe it’s because I mix with comedians. Constant, endlessly boasting.

You took a break in your career to write a book. What do you prefer performing or writing?

With comedy it’s immediate, you have people in front of you and it either works, or it doesn’t, there’s no debate. When you write things there are always people saying we need to change things, you should do it like that, or that doesn’t work.

What’s your secret skill?

Cleaning the inside of a car.

If you were on death row what would be your last meal?

A cheese and pickle sandwich.
