Inspired by IWM’s extensive collections and stories of their respective grandfathers’ own experiences, Leytonstone designer Bob and Roberta Smith has created a series of new works.

Members of the public can own items emblazoned with the words: ‘How Do We Understand 1914-1918?’ The designer is encouraging people to sew this onto their clothing as a lasting reminder of the consequences of World War One.

“What might have been if so many people of a generation had lived? Both my grandfathers fought in the war and survived. This range suggests we start by thinking about creativity that was lost,” he explains.
