Experience an authentic wartime Christmas at Forty Hall, in Enfield this December, as a group of local volunteers will be hosting a 1940s Candlelit Tour.

The team, many of whom have worked in a voluntary capacity at Forty Hall for several years, have undertaken weeks of rehearsals and will perform from a script written by Marc Day, writer of Millfield Theatre’s pantomime each year.

Set in the 1940s, the tours aim to re-create a wartime Christmas setting that is packed full of history and drama. Visitors can also expect to meet a surprise guest or two on their tour round the historic house, before travelling back to the Victorian era and then forward in time to learn more about the 2011 restoration of the Hall.

Jane Newcombe, who lives in Enfield and will perform in the tour this year, says: “Forty Hall is a very special place to me; I have volunteered at the Hall since 2012.

"Little did I know when I started out helping with administration that I would eventually be performing in the festive tours. Taking part is such a privilege; to be part of something different and to make friends along the way has been wonderful.”

Paul Everitt, head of leisure and culture at Enfield Council, says: “I am so impressed by this group of volunteers who are imagining a bygone era and bringing it back to life in the famous Candlelight Tours.

“They’ve done their research, they’ve hunted for costumes in charity shops and customised them. They’ve rehearsed for weeks to get it just right and they’re ready to bring history alive for the residents of Enfield to help them better understand their past.”
