The unsung creative heroes of east London are being recognised in the new Artskickers Awards, created by Hackney dweller Angie Gough.

The awards are designed for people to nominate those in the creative industry, such as teachers, artists, musicians and actors, who go the extra mile in helping others, but may not have been acknowledged for their hard work.

There are five categories including, Community Superhero, Future Artist and Best Arts Teacher, as well as one east London artist being honoured as “Chief Artskicker”.

Entries will be judged by a panel of local sponsors, including Olivier Award winning actresses Denise Gough and Sharon D. Clarke, poet Lemn Sissay, street artist Zabou, artists Gavin Turk and Deborah Curtis, musician Rennell Shaw (otherwise known as Rudimental) and John Mulholland, editor of The Observer.

Angie is mother of three who lives in Hackney and has spent the past year working with Love East magazine in the hope of inspiring people in the area to make the most of the “brilliant” cultural scene in east London.

She says explains: “East London is brimming with inspiring, hard-working, passionate individuals and organisations who bridge the gap between those who get to benefit from arts participation and those who don’t.

“It is about time that someone thanked them for their efforts, got them some publicity and gave them a good night out, so I’m teaming up with Love East magazine and a great team of volunteers to do just that.”

The deadline for entries is Saturday, March 4. To find out more or to nominate someone, visit: artskickersawards.com
