News of a report into a possible “park and ride” has divided opinion.

A report from Epping Forest District Council is due at the end of the month on the possibility of using parts of North Weald airfield as a weekday car park, serving a bus to Epping underground station.

The Tube car park in Epping serves large numbers of workers trying to access the Central Line, and it is often at full capacity.

Ann Showler works at the station, and she welcomed the possibility of extra bus services.

She said: “I would say yes, it would definitely be a good idea.

“There are not many buses and the ones they have got, they are not very frequent.

“I come to work on the train but for the people around here it has got to be a good thing.”

Sue Loder is a fundraiser for the North Weald Residents Association, which has fought to keep the airfield running.

She said it was a “little gold mine” for the council but she said a park and ride would only work if North Weald train station re-opened.

She said: “A park and ride to where, who is going to use it?

“It would work if we had a park and ride and an active train station here, but people will not use it if it just for Epping.

“They should open the station here.

“A plan has got to help Epping as well as bring wealth into the village- it has got to help both.”

John Havers is the managing director of the North Weald Aviation Museum, which operates from the airfield.

He said: “I do not know if a park and ride would ever work.

“As long as it makes money for the council I do not have a problem with it.

“It would be good if it worked properly but you would have to pay, and people will drive 30 miles further just not to pay to park.

“You would need quite a lot of cars to make it work.

“The council does come up with some lovely ideas but you never know if they are going to work.”
