The son of a woman who has just turned 100 has said never having gravy on her dinner was one of the reasons for her long life.

Annie Jones celebrated her birthday with family and friends at Tallis House in Ninefields, Waltham Abbey - her home for the last 18 months.

When asked what he thought was the key to his mother's long life, her son Malcolm, 65, said: “She never smoked, never drank, always worked tremendously hard and never had gravy on her dinner.

“Just a normal person – her mother lived to 96 as well.

“She is just an ordinary lady, never really been abroad, always been happy with family and family life and working when necessary.”

After growing up in Merthyr Tydfil, a coal mining town in Wales, Mrs Jones worked as chamber maid at homes in Cardiff where she met her late husband.

Several years after meeting, they moved to London where their family grew up in Angel, Islington, with a daughter Brenda, now 72, and another son Alan, 68.

“It was a great day for her and she is smiling,” Mr Jones added.
