Next month a team of four people will tackle a gruelling 1,000 mile cycle to raise money in memory of a young boy who sadly died after suffering from a rare condition.
In 2014, one-year-old Mason Young passed away after spending five months at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where he was treated for rare DiGeorge Syndrome and a missing thymus gland.
Next month, Team Raindrop from Ongar will tackle the route between Land’s End and John O’Groats, raising money in memory of Mason for the hospital that helped care for him.
Ongar Leisure Centre trainer Melodie Flaimant will set off on the 14 day cycle on August 22, cycling with club members Louise Dowell, Denise Gigg and Shaun Harvey.
General manager at the leisure centre, Geraint Hole, is Mason’s grandfather.
He said: “It is a great comfort to our family that Team Raindrop thought of us and asked us if they could to do this ride in Mason’s memory.
“They are raising money for an amazing hospital.
“Mason spent the last five months of his life at Great Ormond Street and the care that they provided was incredible and they did everything they could to save his life.
“All the money we raise will help them to keep providing the high standard of care and carrying out the research into diseases like DiGeorge Syndrome that Mason was born with.”
