Facial recognition technology, identification scanning and a ban on glassware are set to be introduced at the notoriously violent Nu Bar, it has been announced.

This week, Epping Forest District Council gave further details of restrictions on the Loughton High Road venue after its licence was reviewed last week.

Last Tuesday (May 3), the council restricted the bar’s opening hours in the wake of a number of fights and attacks, including a man having his neck slashed in a “disturbance” involving about 40 people.

As well as a new closing time of 0.30am – cut back from 2.30am – other conditions have been imposed in an attempt to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour.

High quality CCTV and facial recognition must be installed alongside digital I.D. scanning, drink glasses have been banned, a dress code to stop people hiding their identity must be introduced and staff will be trained on issues such as underage drinking and drug abuse.

An incident register must also be kept and a restriction on the number of people in the smoking area will be introduced.

A spokesman for the council said: “Licensing committee councillors listened very carefully to all sides of the argument but felt a clear need to impose these restrictions and protect our residents from the nuisance and harm caused by late-night rowdy behaviour at Nu Bar.”

He added: “We expect Nu Bar’s owners to take heed of this tough stance and understand that the kind of behaviour associated with their premises over the last few months is intolerable and unacceptable.

“Essex Police catalogued eight separate incidents in the last few months, including one involving 40 people.

“Local residents have the right to a reasonable degree of peace, quiet and security.”

The licence holder, Greene King, has until May 24 to either appeal or accept the conditions.

The venue remains closed, and its official website was offline this morning (May 12).
