Our reporters have been at polling stations in Epping Forest, asking people about the hopes and concerns which guided their votes.

Immigration, economics, the UK’s standing in the world and future generations were the key issues for most people.

Some hoped a vote for Leave could mean more school places and jobs for British people, while those voting Remain said the country is stronger within the EU and more capable to deal with issues such as security and economic threats.

Uncertainty about the future was one of the things that united people on both sides of the debate.

Ross Porter in Loughton said: “Neither side has made a convincing argument, you don’t know what to believe.

“We’re not sure what will happen if we leave and people don’t want to vote for uncertainty, so I think we’ll end up remaining.”

In Epping Lucia, 24, said there were too few school places and a strain on the NHS because of high levels of immigration.

“I voted for my daughter, for the future,” she said.

“House prices keep going up and she’ll never be able to afford it.

“It is hard to get a job as well.

Self-employed Darren Segar, 40, was keen to give his point of view in Epping.

He said he voted Remain – but only because he hopes to leave the country one day, enjoying the same freedom of movement which he claims has caused problems in society.

He believes central government and local authorities are favourable to people coming to the United Kingdom with little money or employment, but have turned their backs on disadvantaged British people who need their help.

“It is clear the Government does not have a true understanding of the people and the problems they have with asylum and immigration,” he said.

“We have allowed too many people to come into this country… people coming in and working, that’s not a problem, and I understand people are fleeing war-torn countries.

“But we have no control, that is the problem.”
