School pupils have voted for the UK’s continued membership of the EU in an unofficial vote.

Despite being unable to take part in today’s momentous referendum, 64 per cent of pupils at West Hatch High School in Chigwell decided Britain is stronger in the union after listening to both sides of the debate.

An assembly was held, followed by discussions of the reasons for voting Remain or Leave.

Economics and geography lessons also focussed on Britain’s position in the EU.

Careers co-ordinator Geoff Towsey said: “It’s amazing to see so many of our students getting involved with the debates and discussions surrounding the EU referendum.

“They have really listened to the various arguments and formulated their own opinion.

“This is a decision which will affect them so it’s great to see that they are so engaged with it - it’s just a shame they can’t vote in the actual referendum.”
