Epping Forest backed Leave, with 48,176 (63%) people backing Brexit, compared to 28,676 who backed Remain.

There was a turnout of 76.9% Chris Whitbread, the leader of the Conservatives on Epping Forest District Council, said: "The people of Epping Forest have spoken and it’s good to have a clear majority.

"The turnout of more than 76% is also absolutely brilliant.

"The fact that so many people across the country have turned up gives meaning to the referendum and shows people have engaged with the key issues.

Epping Forest District councillor, Rod Butler, who represents UKIP in Honey Lane ward in Waltham Abbey, said: "My wife and I cheered the Epping Forest result when we found out.

From going round and speaking to people in the district, it was obvious there was a lot of support for leaving the EU.

People had got to the point where they heard so many stories about the EU, there was a lot of scepticism from people about the benefits of staying in."
