The George in Wanstead and The Kings Ford in Chingford Mount have both been named in the Good Beer Guide 2017.

Both pubs were assessed by Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) members who judged its customer service, decor, overall atmosphere and of course, what it has on tap.

But how good do their brews actually taste?

Reporters Lara Keay and Joe Roberts headed down to The George to find out.

Dark Munro, 4 per cent

We really liked this dark, mahogany-coloured mild ale from the Orkney Islands. Its chocolatey undertones got a definite thumbs up and would make and ideal post-dinner drink if you were skipping dessert.

Doom Bar, 4 per cent

You can’t really go wrong with this classic amber ale from in Rock, in Cornwall. It seems every pub worth its salt is stocking it nowadays, and for good reason – it’s dangerously drinkable.

Truman’s Firestarter, 4.2 per cent

The Firestarter commemorates the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London. This red ale is big on hops but still manages to deliver a subtle taste.

Augustinian, 4.5 per cent

The Augustinian is slightly stronger at 4.5 per cent and made at a microbrewery in Essex. It’s not bad, but doesn’t go down as smoothly as some of the others on offer at The George.

Thunder Trail, 5.2 per cent

This American English-style ale is a fair attempt at doing what we do best here in the UK. Chosen as part of Wetherspoon’s international craft beer showcase, it’s a commendable effort, falling just short of the real ale heavyweights on offer.

London Pride, 4.1 per cent

Brewed just 23 miles away from Wanstead at Fuller’s Chiswick Brewery, London Pride is an absolute classic. Need we say any more?

So which beers were the winner?

For Lara, it was the Dark Munro.

Epping Forest Guardian:

She said: "It's certainly the most uniquely tasting ale on offer and it will definitely have me trying more darker ales in the future."

For Joe, the decision weighed more heavily.

Epping Forest Guardian:

He said: "It was always going to be a toss-up between the Doom Bar and London Pride, they are my go-to choices in any pub. Out of loyalty I'll go for London Pride, a constant classic delivering a smooth yet malty taste ale drinkers all know and love."

The George manager Bonnie Smith said she is "delighted" the pub has been named in the guide for another year.
