A crash on a notorious road, which left two people in hospital, has sparked fresh calls for measures to calm traffic.

Waltham Abbey Town Council wants to be taken on Crooked Mile, after a two-car collision at around 6pm on Tuesday, January 3, near the junction with Laundry Lane.

A man was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, with head and back injuries, while a woman, who had been trapped in a vehicle, was also taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The council said it is now stepping up its campaign for traffic calming measures on the road, which began following another serious crash on the road in November last year.

Waltham Abbey Town Council leader councillor Mrs Liz Webster said: "The town council is sorry to hear about this most recent accident and hope that those involved make a speedy recovery.

“We would also like to thank the emergency services for their work.

"The town council has been working hard communicating with Essex Highways over this stretch of road for some time now, stressing the dangers of the road and trying to persuade them to take some action to improve road safety.

"We hope they will now take notice and do something about it."

There have been nine serious crashes reported on the stretch of road since 2011, as well as more than 30 minor incidents.

In July last year, a 33-year-old man was killed in an early-morning crash on Crooked Mile between a Volkswagen Golf and a Mercedes.

A 28-year-old man from Nazeing was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

In 2011, a 64-year-old pensioner from Waltham Abbey died after his car crashed into a wall on the road.

Police believed the man had fallen ill while driving.
