A notorious Loughton nightspot has lost its licence yet again after a late-night incident at the bar.

Nu Bar has seen its licence temporarily suspended by Epping Forest council after police were called to the High Road business in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, February 5.

It is alleged an incident took place alongside a breach of the bar’s licence conditions. Its fate will now be decided at a meeting of the council’s Licensing Sub-Committee on March 7.

Police have yet to confirm any other details about what took place at the venue that evening.

A council spokesman said: “The decision was taken by Licensing Sub-Committee Councillors to temporarily suspend the licence.

“This means any licensable activities are not permitted to take place in the interim period between now and the full Licensing Committee hearing.

”A final decision will be reached at the meeting scheduled for March 7.

“At the hearing councillors will assess the evidence brought by Essex Police and make the decision to either amend the licence or its conditions, allow it to remain in place or revoke the licence completely.”

On the afternoon of February 5, the bar tweeted a picture of dozens of clubbers inside the venue on the night the incident is alleged to have taken place.

The tweet read: “Just a glimpse ram jammed! Such a good night everyone enjoyed themselves! What matters to us most.”

Nu Bar has experienced a chequered past and saw its license conditions restricted in May last year following a string of violent incidents.

In April 2016, a man in his 20s was seriously injured after his neck was slashed in a “disturbance” involving around 40 people at the nightspot.

Paul Saunders, 30, of Chadwell St Mary, was eventually jailed for eight years for carrying out the attack, believed to be connected to a feud between traveller families.

In June 2015, an 18-year-old man was hospitalised following a brawl at the bar, with three men later being arrested in connection with the incident.

Essex Police Chief Inspector Lewis Basford is the applicant for the latest bid to remove the bar’s licence.

Chief Inspector Basford said: “Essex Police is continuing to work around the issue of public safety and crime and disorder in the night-time economy.”
