A new app is set to launch allowing history buffs to take a step back in time to learn about one of Waltham Forest’s most important housing estates.

The app, which will be available for download from March 23, will let locals and visitors take an interactive tour through the social history of the former Warner Estate in Walthamstow and Leyton.

Available for Apple and Android devices, the app includes three guided tours of significant areas on the estate, as well as hundreds of accompanying photos and oral history from residents.

It was created by artists Lucy Harrison and Katherine Green of Rendezvous Projects and a team of volunteers backed by Lottery funding.

Ms Harrison said: “This app celebrates the rich history of the Warner Estate and has been brought together from the contributions of local residents and volunteers.

“We hope that people will enjoy using it either in the streets of Waltham Forest or from home.”

The Warner Estate was constructed from the late 19th Century onwards by Thomas Courtenay Warner and the Warner Company.

Until the late 1960s it was exclusively lived in by renters. Today, many of the homes are privately-owned but some of the original families, now in their fifth generation, remain on the estate.

The app is part of WE: the Ex-Warner Project, which also includes an exhibition at Vestry House Museum in Walthamstow until May 21, as well as a project website and other events.

The 'WE' app will be available on iTunes and Google Play from March 23. For more information, visit: exwarnerproject.co.uk.
