Police are yet to make an arrest over the acid attack on former boxer Michael Watson last month, despite TV appeals for information.

Mr Watson was sprayed in the face with a noxious substance during an attempted carjacking in The Ridgeway, Chingford, on February 16.

The former Commonwealth middleweight champion, 51, and his carer, Lennard Ballack, were involved in a minor crash with a white Mercedes before its occupants tried to carjack the pair.

Mr Watson became entangled in the seatbelt as the thieves tried to steal the car and they eventually gave up, making a getaway in the Mercedes down Kings Road.

A Crimewatch appeal aired last Monday (March 6), urging the public to come forward with information on the incident, but an arrest is still to be made.

Superintendent Paul Clements, of Waltham Forest police, said: "We have had a positive response following the Crimewatch programme but I would reiterate our appeal for information relating to this investigation, including to trace the white Mercedes car involved.

"I am particularly keen for any information about where the car went after it turned into Kings Road.

"I would like to praise the courage of both victims in the weeks following this traumatic attack.

"Anyone who has information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact police at the earliest opportunity."

Both Mr Watson and his carer were assessed at the scene by paramedics before being taken to an east London hospital for further treatment. Both were later discharged.

Mr Watson, who lives in Chingford, had his boxing career cut short when he was put into a coma during a 1991 fight with Chris Eubank.

He suffered brain damage but has since learned to walk and talk again.

Police are also investigating a link between the attack on Mr Watson and a similar carjacking on teenager Bradley Robinson at a petrol station in Loughton days before.

Mr Robinson, 19, was sprayed with a “strong alkali” substance and was blinded for more than two weeks. He is only now beginning to regain sight in one eye.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Waltham Forest via: 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.
