A Leyton bar could be stripped of its licence after neighbours were kept up by a late-night "customer appreciation party".

Waltham Forest council officers have applied to remove the licence of A&J Restaurant and Bar, in Lea Bridge Road, with the case set to be heard at a meeting on Wednesday (March 29).

The hearing comes after nearby residents lodged more than 30 noise complaints against the nightspot between March 2015 and January this year.

The saga culminated on Thursday, December 22, when officers visited a neighbour’s home at midnight during a "customer appreciation party".

An officer’s report into the evening said: “The bass from music was immediately audible, but the impact was occasionally reduced by the boiler.

"Whilst present we also witnessed shouting by customers in the garden, even though the double glazed window was closed.

"We moved to the complainant’s bedroom and noted that the bass was significantly louder than in the kitchen.

"The level of noise from the music and shouting was intrusive and would significantly impact on the complainant’s ability to sleep."

The bar is licensed to operate until midnight on weekdays. However, when officers left the property at 12.38am, they reported seeing customers inside the premises, while loud music continued to play.

In a letter to the council, the complainant said: "These people have caused me so much anxiety and stress. I am not able to sleep.

"I need to be alert and focused at work. For that reason I have started taking sleeping pills. I am now addicted to them and not able to sleep without them.

"I am so nervous to go to bed because I never know when they are having a party. These people do not have respect for anyone."

The council had previously written to the bar’s owner, Bolanle Balogun, after a complaint over noise at a "Ladies Evening" on Wednesday, November 23 last year.

Council officers stated in their report Mr Balogun claimed the noise had been caused by "overnight building works".

Waltham Forest council’s licensing committee will hear evidence on the case and decide on whether to revoke A&J’s licence at a meeting on Wednesday.
