A STUDENT is urging his peers to vote in a “crucial” snap general election.

Zac Grego, from Walthamstow, is a student ambassador at Epping Forest College, in Borders Lane, Loughton.

The 18-year-old studied politics at A Level before going to the college. He is “passionate” about current affairs, and has started a website to inform other students.

He said: “Politics is something that you cannot avoid. I like the prospect of informing students to give them knowledge. You can remain impartial this way. When I was studying I found that it was hard to find balanced news. Everyone who votes can form an opinion.”

The June 8 election will be Zac’s first time voting, and he says he would support the government if they proposed to lower the voting age, even if he does feel that young people are becoming more disengaged with politics.

He said: “It’s their future. I think young people are not engaged in politics. It’s constantly not good, but I think if the voting age was lowered, the government would be much more inclined involve young people.

“My guess is that the young could literally be the tipping point on so many issues. They need to have a say.

“I can understand why they don’t have it at the moment though. With the Conservatives in power for the last seven years and with the way that the youth vote, why would they want the youth to be more knowledgeable?”

The former politics student also believes that Brexit will be a main issue in the coming weeks, and the election will be won or lost on it.

In an interview last week, former Prime Minister Tony Blair said the election was “something bigger than party allegiance.”

Zac does not agree with this however, and said: “I think that Brexit is a crucial aspect of the election. I do not think Tony Blair was correct. Brexit is at the forefront of people’s minds.”

Zac’s website gives information on each party’s policies and the basics of government.

The deadline to register to vote is on May 21 at 11:45pm at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
