A remembrance event will be held to mark the 22nd anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre.
Amnesty International has organised the event in Walthamstow Town Square on Sunday (July 16).
In July 1995 thousands of Muslim Bosniak men and boys were killed in the town of Srebrenica during the Bosnian War.
Volunteers will slowly paint ‘8372’, the number of victims, on a white sheet in an effort to draw the attention of shoppers.
They will then hold up the sheet with a banner bearing the names of those murdered. The event will be recorded and made into a short film.
Passersby will be invited to sign a book of condolences which will be sent to the mothers of the dead.
Organiser Deepa Shah of Amnesty International said: “I was looking for a public space where there would be lots of people passing by and that’s why I picked Walthamstow Town Square.
“The idea is to create a short film that we can then use to raise awareness online. It’s creating something that will last beyond this time. It’s something long lasting.
“A commemoration doesn’t always have to be silent and sombre. It is also about getting people’s attention.”
The painting will begin at 2.30pm and is expected to last until 4pm.
