A farm has chosen the new name for its latest eight-legged addition after a competition.

Lee Valley Park Farms in Waltham Abbey has christened its new tarantula “Ember”, after a competition that saw more than 50 entries.

Francesca Ballinger, from Woodford Green, saw her suggestion picked as the favourite, after a poll that saw other options such as Hotleg and Incy thrown into the mix.

Ember, a two-inch long Mexican Red Knee Tarantula, is the first its species to take up residence at the farm.

The introduction of Lee Valley Farm’s latest attraction is one of several events planned over the summer including falconry displays and lamb racing.

Lee Valley Park Farms manager, James Broomfield, said: “Our packed programme of activities throughout the summer are going down a treat, with many families keen to see all our animals and enjoy the other fun activities we have on offer.
