A new development which will provide around 440 homes in Walthamstow, including a 16-storey tower block, has broken ground.

Legal and General begun work on its Blackhorse Mills scheme today (Wednesday, September 6) at the former industrial site in Wickford Way, near Blackhorse Lane.

The “build-to-rent” scheme, which was awarded planning permission by Waltham Forest Council in October last year, is expected to welcome its first residents from late 2019.

The development will consist of 440 new homes, as well as commercial space across five new buildings.

Two buildings on the site will stand at more than ten storeys, with the tallest reaching 16 flights.

Legal and General has appointed Galliford Try Partnerships at the site contractor on a £120 million contract.

Dan Batterton, buy to rent fund manager at Legal and General, said: “Blackhorse Lane is a hugely vibrant and rapidly growing area of London.

“It needs new quality housing and we are pleased to have appointed Galliford Try Partnerships to help us achieve our vision of creating a vibrant and healthy community.

“Waltham Forest Council has been a very supportive forward thinking partner and it is only through this joined up, progressive approach that we are able to make such a large investment into the Blackhorse Lane community, supporting residents and businesses.”

Objections to the scheme were raised by residents last year, who cited concerns over the height of buildings, loss of light for current residents and impact on local infrastructure in the Blackhorse Lane area.

However, a report compiled by council officers at the time claimed the towers would be a “high quality” development and provide a “gateway” to the borough.
