A machete-wielding man has been jailed over the killing of a former celebrity minder.

Tommy Roome, 20, of Rams Grove, Romford was found guilty of the manslaughter of Ricky Hayden, 27, at the Old Bailey on Monday July 31.

He was cleared of murder and the attempted murder of Ricky’s father Paul.

Today, Friday September 8, Roome was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in a young offenders' institute, with a further five years on licence.

Tarrel Hinds of Manford Cross, Chigwell was found not guilty of the murder of Ricky and attempted murder of Paul in the attack last year.

Ricky was killed outside his home in Gibbfield Close in the Marks Gate area of Romford in the early hours of September 13 2016.

After being woken by a noise, Ricky spotted a group of men around his brother’s moped parked outside and thinking they were trying to steal it, he went out to confront them.

Ricky, wearing only boxer shorts, was joined by his 21-year-old brother Perry and their father Paul, now 55, who was armed with a baseball bat.

They three men were attacked by Tommy Roome who was carrying a large machete-style knife.

Ricky suffered a deep stab wound in the thigh which damaged major arteries and a vein.

Paul was stabbed in the Achilles tendon and both men were rushed to hospital where Ricky died the following day. Paul was released after treatment.

The family’s dog Roxy was also stabbed in the altercation and survived.

Roome was arrested a week after the attack and Kevin Malamba, 20 of Rodney Road, Southwark, was arrested the following month.

Malamba admitted perverting the course of justice and was sentenced to 30 months' imprisonment in a young offenders' institute.

Detective Inspector Rita Tierney, of the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "Roome had gone to Romford that night in search of another man who he had had a previous dispute with.

"Ricky and his father, believing the group were going to steal a moped belonging to Ricky’s brother, confronted them.

“Roome did not hesitate to respond with extreme violence and inflict serious injury on Ricky and his father using the large machete he brought with him.

"Sadly, Ricky did not recover from his injuries. Ricky was unarmed and in a state of undress, and he was running away from his attacker at the time.

"Roome will now spend a significant term behind bars."
