A LARGE fine has been handed to a woman who paid a man with a van £50 to dump her household waste.

Officials found the fly-tipped black sacks of Justina Cereskaite, of Theydon Grove in Epping, left by garages in Connaught Lane, Ilford.

The 29 year-old admitted contacting a man on Gumtree to dispose of her waste, paying him £50, but failed to ask where would dispose of the bags, to check if he had a waste carrier’s licence and did not receive a waste transfer note.

No trace of the man could be found online.

Ms Cereskaite pleaded guilty for failing her duty of care to ensure that her waste was taken and disposed of by a licensed waste carrier, and was fined £655.

Councillor Sheila Bain, Cabinet Member for Civic Pride, said, “The three cases which resulted in large fines for Redbridge residents last week are a clear indication of how seriously Redbridge takes the incorrect disposal of waste in our community.

“It is essential that the removal of waste is carried out legally in order to protect our streets from fly-tipping, to ensure a safer and cleaner environment for everyone in the borough.

“Not checking for a waste carrier licence is no excuse – it’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure their waste is being disposed of properly.”

All cases were heard at Barkingside Magistrates Court on February 2.
