The fiftieth anniversary of when the last steam train ran on a mainline is being marked with an exhibition.
On August 11, 1968 the 1T57 ‘Fifteen Guinea Special ran from Liverpool to Carlisle via Manchester one final time.
In her honour, the Epping Ongar Railway will launch an exhibition in its Penny Salon Gallery at Ongar station titled 'Barry and after: fifty years since the end of main line steam.'
It features pictures from the last years of steam, early preservation and the return to steam on the main lines following the lifting of the steam ban.
The role of the National Railway Museum in returning locomotives in its collection to working order and the restoration of engines rescued from Barry scrapyard are also highlighted.
