MPs have reacted with shock and condemnation to a terror attack outside Parliament this morning which left at least three people injured.

Shortly after 7.30am a Ford Fiesta ploughed into cyclists and pedestrians before smashing into a security barrier in front of the Houses of Parliament.

John Cryer, Leyton and Wanstead MP, encouraged people to stand united in the wake of the attack, saying: “I understand that man has been arrested after this morning’s incident in which a car was driven into barriers outside the Houses of Parliament. I am informed that two people were injured.

"I am thankful their injuries are not life threatening, and my thoughts are with them and their families.

“The police have confirmed that the incident is being treated as a terrorist act. I utterly condemn all acts of terrorism on our city.

“We have shown again and again that we will not be divided and will stand up united and together against terrorism on our streets."

Armed police arrested the driver of the Fiesta at the scene on suspicion of terrorism offences.

The man, who is in his late 20s, remains in custody. Police say he is not co-operating.

A man and a woman were rushed to hospital this morning. The man has since been discharged and the woman remains in hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Another man was also treated at the scene but didn’t require hospital treatment.

Walthamstow MP, Stella Creasy, said in a tweet: “Shocking and frightening Westminster the scene of a possible terrorist incident again and thinking of those injured in this morning’s events - thank you to the police for their action.

“I and my team not in central London today so our office not affected Walthamstow.”

Eleanor Laing, MP for Epping Forest, tweeted: “Thoughts are with those that have been affected by today’s incident in Westminster. Thank you to those who responded so quickly and bravely.”
