A man who has failed to clean up his nuclear bunker could find himself back in court.

In 2015 Raymond Sturgess bought a disused bunker at the Royal Observer Corps site in Chigwell for £20,000 with the intention of turning the radiation-proof dwelling into a study space for his children.

Such designs seems to have gone unfulfilled however.

On June 28, 2018 Mr Sturgess was was convicted of failing to comply with a notice requiring him to remove building materials, waste, household items plastic items, plastic and card at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court.

The court gave him until the end of July to clear the mess or else he would face a £100 per-day fine.

Instead on complying with the order, the Stanford Court, Waltham Abbey resident put up opaque hoarding around the site.

A spokesperson for Epping Forest District Council said: "Following a prosecution in June, Mr Sturgess was given till the end of July 2018 by the district council to clear waste from the land at the former Royal Observer Corps underground bunker site.

"An enforcement officer has visited the site since and found the notice served earlier in the year has still not been complied with.

"Mr Sturgess has been advised that the district council is now seeking a further prosecution.

"It is still expected that the land should be cleared.”
