An Epping campaigner has set up boycotts of nightclubs and bars across London as part of the "Girls Night In" protest.

The campaign aims to address the problem of drink spiking following a sharp rise in cases across September and October.

The movement has established support in almost 50 locations including London, Essex, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Bristol, Falmouth, Hull, St Andrews and Swansea.

In the last two months there have been 198 confirmed reports of drink spiking and 24 reports of spiking by injection, the National Police Chiefs' Council said.

Campaigners believe the financial impact on venues- form people not attending- is what is required to generate action.

Ellie O’Sullivan, of Epping has set up "Girls Night In London” with her sister- they created an Instagram page to promote boycotts around London and have since received thousands of followers.

In a BBC interview, Ms O’Sullivan said: “We have had several messages from people saying that they have been injected and sharing their testimony and wanting to raise awareness.

“There is a shame culture when people are spiked as many people think they are just too drunk.

“Now, with the injection people are waking up with bruises and they can see they have been psychically harmed.

“It is extremely scary for women going out.”

Boycotting events will be taking place across Essex bars and nightclubs tonight (October 28) and in London tomorrow night (October 29).
