Michail Antonio may have proved his worth in West Ham's attack but he could soon find himself back in defence.

Winger Antonio was pressed into a makeshift right-back role towards the end of last season due to a spate of injuries, but after a promising start mistakes crept in, culminating in the error which gifted Chelsea a penalty last Monday.

Injuries further up the pitch to Andy Carroll, Dimitri Payet and Andre Ayew meant the 26-year-old was back in his preferred role on the flank against Bournemouth on Sunday.

And Antonio responded with the first Premier League goal at the London Stadium as West Ham christened their new home with a 1-0 victory.

However, Hammers manager Slaven Bilic has not ruled out using Antonio as a right-back again if circumstances dictate.

"You want your players to be as comfortable as possible," he said. "But what the team requires is more important.

"Rule number one if you want to stand any chance is you have to be humble and sacrifice for the team, like he did last year.

"I have told him it will be mixed. He's going to play where the team needs him."

Antonio struck with five minutes remaining, just as West Ham's housewarming party was threatening to turn into a damp squib.

Cherries midfielder Harry Arter had been sent off just eight minutes before Antonio's goal for two bookable offences.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe felt the dismissal was pivotal and was irritated that the midfielder's first booking was for dissent.

"We know the rules, dissent will be a yellow card and that's the one that burns with us," he said. "We need to be disciplined and keep 11 players on the pitch.

"We stood up to a physical test very well but the goal was a killer blow. One moment of quality from them and we were punished."

Carroll is out for four to six weeks with a knee injury but Bilic hopes to have Payet and fellow midfielder Manuel Lanzini available within the next week.
