A Harry Kane hat-trick helped Tottenham to a commanding 4-0 win over high-flying West Brom at White Hart Lane.

Spurs outclassed the visitors in the day’s early kick-off and three goals from Kane, as well as a Gareth McAuley own goal, moved Mauricio Pochettino’s side up to second in the Premier League.

Tottenham should have been ahead after just five minutes when Danny Rose whipped a dangerous ball into the path of Kane, who scuffed his shot wide.

Six minutes later the England striker did have the ball in the back of the net.

Christian Eriksen’s dinked ball into the area found an unmarked Kane, who was afforded space to turn before firing past the onrushing Ben Foster to score his eleventh league goal of the season.

Tottenham’s number 10 could have had a second shortly after, but could not stretch to meet Victor Wanyama’s drilled ball into the six yard box.

Dele Alli thought he had doubled Spurs’ advantage on the half-hour mark, but his cool finish after another clever Eriksen pass was ruled out after he was rightfully judged offside.

Seconds later the home side were two up- Eriksen’s shot from the edge of the area took unfortunate deflections off both Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley before finding the back of the net.

West Brom looked bereft of ideas in the first half, failing to even record a shot on goal as lone striker Saloman Rondon was marked out of the game by Tottenham’s back three.

The Baggies did register a chance in the first minute after the restart- Matt Philips was given an opportunity to run at the Spurs defence, but flashed his shot wide.

However, this was not the beginning of a resurgence for the away side and Tottenham continued to exert their superiority on the game.

West Brom keeper Foster was forced to make a string of good saves in the second half, the best coming when he parried Kane’s low curling shot from 20 yards.

But Foster could not keep Spurs at bay for long and the home side went three goals to the good in the 77th minute.

Kyle Walker picked McAuley’s pocket high up the pitch and crossed to Kane in the centre. The ball came at an awkward height for the striker, but he was able to side-foot home.

Five minutes later Kane had his hat-trick, when he finished calmly after a superb one-two with Alli.

In truth, Tottenham’s margin of victory could have been even wider, but Pochettino will no doubt be happy with his side’s seventh consecutive win in all competitions.

Spurs will next travel to the Etihad Stadium next Saturday for a top-four showdown with Manchester City.
