Sam Byram has revealed his delight at making a winning return to the West Ham United first team after featuring in the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The 23-year-old, who joined the Hammers from Leeds United last January, has spent three months of an injury disrupted campaign out with a hamstring complaint.

He was introduced as a half-time substitute against Palace and was pleased to mark his first appearance since October with a win.

“It was a great game to make my return in,” Byram told the club website.

“I thought we played well in the second half. We were a bit slow moving the ball in the first half, but we put together some good moves after half-time and scored three good goals.

“I’m still feeling a bit rusty to be honest. It’s early for me to come back but I’m absolutely delighted that it’s come.”

Byram certainly made an impact as his arrival at right-back saw West Ham switch to playing two up front and create a great deal more going forward.

With both West Ham and Palace still involved in the relegation conversation heading into the match at London Stadium, the victory took on greater significance.

It was the club’s first win by more than one goal at their new home in the Premier League and Byram hopes they can build on the success.

He said: “We needed this, it does feel like a real lift. The team were together afterwards and it was a great atmosphere around the place so hopefully it’s upwards from here.

“There’s been a lot in the news over the last week but we’re a team and we stick together. We showed on Saturday, particularly in the second half, that we can pull together and that we’ve got a great squad.”
