Jose Fonte believes West Ham United didn’t deserve to concede the agonising late equaliser which saw them draw 2-2 with West Brom on Saturday.

The Hammers looked to have secured a late winner after Manuel Lanzini fired in from distance, only for Gareth McAuley to level the scores in the fourth minute of added time.

After going behind to Nacer Chadli’s superb individual strike early on at London Stadium, United did well to fight back and Fonte felt they were good value for three points.

“We are disappointed in the dressing room obviously,” the Portuguese international told the club website. “It was a tough one to take, we didn’t deserve it at all.

“Even when we conceded so early in the first half, I thought we showed personality and belief in how we wanted to play.

“We created many chances, got back into the game and were 2-1 up in the last minute.”

The match was notable for a number of refereeing decisions which seemed to go against the Hammers.

Firstly, Sofiane Feghouli’s first half leveller was chalked off by the linesman’s flag and they also had two penalty shouts waved away.

Fonte echoed the sentiments of his manager, Slaven Bilic, as he questioned Michael Oliver’s officiating.

He said: “We were also disappointed with some decisions that went against us, but if we keep playing like this, then we will win more often than not. We need to keep believing in what we are doing.”

With the Hammers not back in action until visiting Watford on February 25, Fonte and the rest of the United squad are heading to Dubai for some warm weather training.

Fonte hopes the trip will provide a timely boost as West Ham prepare for the final 13 games of their season.

He said: “It’s time to get some Vitamin D. We are going away as a squad and hopefully we will come back stronger.”
