James Dayton says he can see himself extending his Leyton Orient stay beyond the duration of the two-year contract he signed with the club on Tuesday.

The midfielder became the O’s 12th new face through the Brisbane Road doors this summer as Steve Davis’ squad overhaul continues.

Being from London, Dayton is happy to have moved his family to the capital and is hopeful of a prolonged career with the E10 club.

“It is nice to have a two-year deal and I can move my family back here, which is a good thing,” Dayton said.

“I have never actually lived here during my career and have always been away from London. I am delighted to be back with my extended family around me as well.

“I would like to stay here longer than two years. In football you can never say ‘I would love to be here this long’ because you just don’t know what is coming.

“If I am honest, I could see myself being here for a good few years if all goes well.”

Dayton’s signing adds further experience to the Orient ranks and he arrives having won the title with Cheltenham in 2016.

He sees similarities between the Robins, who he made 57 appearances for, and his new club and says the O’s are capable of matching their success.

“There is a great togetherness here and I believe that is a massive part of what will get you success in this league,” he said.

“On top of that there is a lot of talent here, so fingers crossed it all goes well and there are positives to come.

“The club is moving forward in the right direction.”

Like many of Orient’s summer arrivals, Dayton had to pass a trial before sealing a move which sees him link up with a manager who has coveted his signature in the past.

Davis looked to sign the midfielder, who can operate on either the left or right, when he was manager of Crewe and the player has been impressed with what he has seen so far.

“Being on trial does put a little bit more pressure on, but I believe in my ability,” he said.

“I had an offer from a team earlier in the summer, but felt I could hold out for better.

“It has been brilliant working with Steve. I have played against his teams before and like the way he plays.”
