Leyton Orient’s positive start to pre-season under Justin Edinburgh continued this evening with a 4-0 win over East Thurrock United at Rookery Hill.

Macauley Bonne’s first half header was backed up by strikes from David Mooney, Josh Koroma and an own goal from Lewis Knight to secure a comfortable victory for the O’s.

Justin Edinburgh named a strong starting line-up for the game, with both Bonne and Mooney wasting chances for Orient to open the deadlock early on.

Bonne came close again on the 25 minute mark when he forced a good save from East Thurrock’s Jack Giddens when released through on goal by James Dayton before another promising opportunity was wasted by Mooney, who fired wide of the target with just the goalkeeper to beat.

Orient’s early pressure would finally pay off just after the half-hour mark when last season’s top scorer Bonne met Charlie Lee’s cross at the far post and planted a header pass Giddens.

East Thurrock came out fired up after half time and Orient had Dean Brill to thank when he pulled off a good save to prevent Sam Higgins from scoring an equaliser from distance.

Higgins was causing the O’s problems at the start of the second half and he swung over a cross which was diverted just inches wide of the post by Tom Derry.

But after creating so many chances in the first half, Orient finally added a second just before the hour mark when Mooney scored his second chip in the space of a couple of days, as he lofted the ball over the onrushing Giddens and into the back of the net.

Edinburgh made a host of changes on the hour mark, one of which was Koroma and that decision paid off within ten minutes, as the Orient youngster notched his fifth goal in pre-season with a fine effort from just outside the area after being released by Shadrach Ogie.

Koroma almost added his second of the game ten minutes later, when his effort struck the crossbar, but the O’s wouldn’t have to wait long to add their fourth, which came just before the 90 minute mark, when the unfortunate Knight could only divert Jobi McAnuff’s cross past his own goalkeeper.

Orient are back in action on Saturday, when they take on Concord Rangers in their fourth pre-season friendly.
