Macauley Bonne has his eyes firmly set on finishing as the National League’s top scorer after penning an improved two-year deal with Leyton Orient.

Bonne handed the O’s a huge boost last week when he quashed talk surrounding a potential exit from East London by signing a new contract with the club, keeping him with Orient until 2020.

The striker proved himself to be one of the most clinical strikers in the National League last season after scoring 25 goals in all competitions, and head coach Justin Edinburgh told the club’s website that Orient had rejected ‘serious offers’ for the 22-year-old’s services this summer.

Bonne, who moved to the Breyer Group Stadium from Colchester United in July 2017, proved his importance to the O’s on Saturday by scoring the winner from the penalty spot to secure Orient a 1-0 win over Boreham Wood, their first on home turf this campaign.

That took his tally to three for this season and the Zimbabwe international wants to play a crucial role in Orient’s promotion push by finishing as the National League’s top scorer.

Asked about whether he could finish as the league’s top scorer, Bonne said: “Yeah I’m confident I can and I’m going to go and do it. I set myself goals and I want to be better than last season as I said. I’m just going to go out and score goals and that’s my target.

“(As a team) no one knows what we can achieve, but it’s down to us to go and put the hard work in. I think everyone within the club knows what we want to achieve and that’s to be in the play offs or even get promoted automatically. But I’m aiming for a play-off spot come May.”

Squad cohesion is a trait that is undoubtedly key for any side which is looking to challenge for promotion.

Both George Elokobi and Sam Sargeant have praised the Orient squad’s spirit when speaking to the Guardian Series this summer, with the latter claiming that the current O’s team was ‘the most tight knit group’ he had ever worked with.

Bonne was also full of praise for the O’s team spirit and believes that togetherness will play a crucial role in the side’s quest for promotion.

“In this team, everyone gets on with each other,” he said.

“There’s no sour or bad eggs in the team. Everyone is each other’s friend and I think that helps massively because on and off the pitch, we all get on like a family and that’s how it’s got to be.

“If you can have a good relationship off the pitch, then on the pitch it is going to be even better. I think everyone wants to look after each other and fight for each other and I think that’s going to take us a long way this season.”
