London residents are being encouraged to take part in The Mill’s exciting new participatory exhibition, The Joke’s On Us.

Walthamstow’s community centre The Mill wants to know what the borough’s best joke is, whether that be an old family favourite, a traditional knock-knock or cutting edge humour worthy of a stand-up routine.

Submissions will then be on display alongside prestigious artwork from the Government Art Collection as part of The Mill’s free new exhibition The Joke’s On Us! between Thursday, April 11 April, and Saturday, May 25.

Londoners can get involved and send @themille17 jokes on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, using the hashtag #TheJokesOnUs, email info@themillE17.org or post them in the Jokebox at The Mill. Jokes are wanted in any language and from around the world – as long as they’re not offensive, they will be on display during The Joke’s On Us show.

An exciting addition to the Waltham Forest Borough of Culture 2019, The Joke’s On Us has been inspired by Peter Liversidge’s artwork Joke Stack, part of the Government Art Collection. Liversidge, a contemporary British artist, wrote letters to comedians asking for their favourite jokes. Twelve replies, screen-printed and framed, will be on show during The Joke’s on Us, alongside the same jokes printed and piled in stacks. As part of the exhibition, visitors can take home the famous jokes.

The show will also include films of people from the community telling jokes, whilst joke-telling workshops with Waltham Forest comedians will be organised throughout the run of the exhibition.

The Joke’s On Us is part of Waltham Forest’s Borough of Culture 2019 programme of Government Art Collection artworks, displaying the work of internationally recognised artists across the borough, making art accessible to local residents as part of their everyday lives.
