A series of events have been launched in a bid to raise much-needed funds to install CCTV at a vandalised playground.

The playground, which is located behind the village hall on North Weald Common, was targeted by vandals in January in an attack which saw graffiti tags sprayed across equipment and glass placed at the top of the slide.

The park, which includes swings, a climbing frame and a pole spin, was officially opened at an annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic in October following a £40,000 fundraising drive by community group, North Weald Mums.

Following the vandalism, the group contacted North Weald Bassett Parish Council in a bid to get CCTV installed at the Weald Common play area to deter future attacks.

Councillors agreed in April that CCTV should be a priority for the site.

Epping Forest Guardian:

The North Weald Mums opened the £40,000 playground in October.

North Weald Mums group treasurer Jennie Russell, who described the attack as a “cruel act of vandalism” said that a series of events have now been organised in a bid to raise the funds.

She said: “With the support of the local Parish Council, North Weald Mums are proud to be hosting a Fun Day on September 6 on North Weald Common.

“We are also holding a Quiz Night the same month and a preloved sale in October.

“These events are to raise funds towards the installation of CCTV equipment to help protect the equipment installed in Oct 2014.

“Once complete we hope to investigate other ways to create a fun and safe environment locally for the young and young at heart of the area.”
