It was a boiling hot day when we ventured into the hip Rhythm Kitchen in Walthamstow, but I was surprised at how busy it was.

Walking in we were greeted by staff that were accommodating and happily spoke through the menu with us with a smile.

As we decided what to eat, we ordered homemade sorrel juice (£2.50) The taste is hard to describe – a little sweet, a little sour, with a twinge of raspberry.

It may not be a huge menu but you will still be spoilt for choice.

The menu offered traditional dishes such as curry goat (£9.95) and jerk chicken (£9.25), as well as some more unusual classics, like braised oxtail (£10.25).

We decided to start with plantain fritters (£4.25) served with a sweet tamarind sauce. They were crispy and flavoursome and we were left wanting more.

There is a hearty vegetarian section featuring ragga stew (£7.95) which includes yam, plantain, red kidney beans and dumplings or a vegetable rundown (£7.95).

Both looked tasty but being carnivores at heart, my companion and I decided to go for some chicken.

We picked tangy jerk wings (£9.25) and jerk chicken (£9.25). Each dish comes with a generous helping of two sides and there are masses to pick from.

From traditional rice and peas to non-traditional mac and cheese, you won’t be leaving this place hungry.

We opted for dumplings, mac and cheese, salad and vegetables for our sides and it was so filling we ended up taking most of it home.

The chicken was cooked to perfection and the flavours were overwhelmingly good and a side of pineapple jam was a lively addition to the dish.

It was all beautifully presented and looked fresh.

The restaurant itself is small but chic, and the relaxed atmosphere means it’s perfect for any occasion – whether it’s a romantic date, a catch-up with a friend or a birthday.
