Christmas lights will be switched on in a ceremony dedicated to lost loved ones.

The annual 'Light up a Life' ceremony at Kings Green in Loughton is a joint venture between the town council and St Clare Hospice.

Townsfolk are invited to come together with their friends and family to remember and celebrate the life of someone close and dedicate a symbolic light in their memory.

The Christmas lights on the large tree by the war memorial will then be switched on.

The event starts at 4.30pm on December 1 at the Loughton Methodist Church in the High Road, with a torch-lit procession heading towards Kings Green at 4.45pm.

Pippa Bryce, administrative officer for the town council, said: "This Light up a Life event gives people a very special opportunity to reflect and share fond memories of loved ones at this poignant time of year.

"There will be an opportunity to sing some favourite carols and, following the short service.

"Hot drinks and mince pies, courtesy of Morrison’s supermarket, will be served back in the Foyer at the Loughton Methodist Church."
