A foodbank has announced they will be relocating in order to provide a better service to customers.

Waltham Abbey Foodbank, based at the Salvation Army in Sewardstone Street, will move to Waltham Cross within the coming months.

The centre run by The Trussell Trust’s Broxbourne Foodbank has been providing fresh produce to those in need for around four years.

Jeremy Pearce, co-ordinator of the Broxbourne Foodbank’s four centres, from Cheshunt, said the decision to relocate was decided at the beginning of the year.

He said: “Housing association B3 Living has given us some premises in Waltham Cross in the Holdbrook Estate and there is an opportunity of using that instead.

“I can have that premises seven days a week which is more convenient for myself and my business to operate there instead of going to the Salvation Army twice a week.

“I just wanted to consolidate it at Waltham Cross so we can offer a better service to everybody in one place.”

Currently, the Waltham Abbey facility opens on Wednesday’s and Friday’s from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

When the new foodbank eventually opens, customers who rely on donations will now have access four times a week.

Mr Pearce said not only will the foodbank provide people with fresh food but also clothes, feminine hygiene products and toys.

The foodbank co-ordinator added: “I’m aiming to give a better service to those who I consider my customers, I’m not depleting their services and want to make sure they get fresh food all the time.

I have been helping those in Waltham Abbey for a considerable amount of time.”

A 10-minute commute on the 66 bus service will be available to travel between the two towns or a 20-minute walk as an alternative.

A spokesperson, on behalf of The Salvation Army in Waltham Abbey, said: “The Salvation Army has hosted the Waltham Abbey distribution centre for the Trussell Trust’s Broxbourne Food Bank for a number of years.

“As a church and charity, which is dedicated to caring for people who are vulnerable or in need, The Salvation Army will continue to offer compassionate support, a listening ear and practical help to the local community in Waltham Abbey.”
