Several awards recognising hard-working and unsung residents make up the North Weald community was presented by members of the Parish Council last night.

Certificates was presented by North Weald Bassett Parish Council chairman Alan Buckley at the Annual Parish Assembly held at The Parish Hall, Thornwood.

Highly Commended certificates were awarded to several members from across the North Weald community throughout the ceremony.

The Young Citizen of the Year award was presented to Jack Rush, an Explorer of 3rd North Weald Scout Group, described as "a great example for the young people of this village".

During the winter Mr Rush clears snow for his neighbours and in nearby streets and remove brambles from paths near the Church Lane flood plain and nature reserve.

His nomination stated that the young people "Look up to Jack and he sets a great example for them.", who has also been chosen to attend the World Scout Jamboree this summer in West Virginia, USA.

A joint Citizen of the Year Award was given to long-standing treasurer of Thornwood Seniors Association, Mary West and treasurer of North Weald Village Hall Trustees, Roger Smith.

Last year, Ms West, raised £3,700 for St Clare Hospice by organising and the Thornwood Open Gardens event, whilst Mr Smith has helped light the Methodist Church Christmas tree since 2004.

The Community Award was presented to Dhruve Vasani, of North Weald Chemists, who received several nominations was described as someone whose "reputation as a special person goes far and wide".

Mr Vasani was also noted for "his kindness and knowledge (which) helps the residents of North Weald every day" and someone who "works tirelessly to ensure that the village has someone to turn to when they are unwell".

The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group Jacky Kelly, Lynn Austin and Jackie Blayney also received the Group and Group Community award respectively for their commitments.

Finally, long-time Poppy Appeal co-ordinator Doreen Lodge received the Lifetime Contribution Award for distributing boxes and collecting donations from residents.
