A riot van and several police cars swarmed to the scene where two shopworkers were allegedly attacked today.

Hertfordshire Police were called to reports two people had assaulted staff at Morrisons in Ascot Road, Watford, at around 3pm this afternoon.

It is believed shopworkers had to restrain a man who lashed out at a member of staff when confronted for allegedly stealing from the shop.

It was reported that a woman known to the man also allegedly assaulted a member of the Morrisons team.

Witnesses saw up to four police cars still surrounding the supermarket after 4pm – and one man was seen face down on the ground in handcuffs wearing a spit hood.

One onlooker said the man was not moving.

Hertfordshire Constabulary said two people had been arrested on suspicion of theft and assault.
