An 83-year-old grandmother completed a daring racetrack challenge to help raise money for charity.

Goolmohr ‘Georgie’ Cantel, from Bishop’s Stortford, raised around £1,400 for St Clare Hospice in Hastingwood after driving in a Suzuki Swift Sport Cup Rally Car Race.

The grandmother of four drove six three-mile laps in a red vehicle around the Langely Park Rally School in Saffron Walden on Saturday, March 30.

Mrs Cantel said she was “thrilled” to have raised so much money, adding: “It’s a lot of fun to fundraise for the hospice in this way, but the real reason that I do it is because I know how valuable their care is to local people.

“And with limited NHS funding, they need to raise around 60% of the entire cost of running the Hospice themselves.”

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored me and donated to the Hospice.”

During her five years volunteering at St Clare Hospice, Mrs Cantel has raised almost £15,500 through a series of sponsored adrenaline-fuelled challenges.

Her achievements include a 490 metre zip-wire flight, walking over the O2 Arena and whizzing down Stratford’s Orbit slide.

After the race, dare-devil gran was invited to do a ‘fast, hot lap’ around the track with the Rally Car Racing Championship winner.

“My role at St Clare means that I see first-hand the difference their care makes to those who are staying on the Inpatient Unit,” said the 83-year-old. “However, my fundraising target is £1,500, and there’s still time for me to collect even more vital funding.”

A statement released by St Clare’s Hopsice said: “Georgie is a dedicated volunteer on St Clare’s Inpatient Unit, tending to patients and their relatives by offering a humble cup of tea or biscuit throughout the day, as well as a listening ear and a chat.”
