A family’s climb up Wales’ highest peak took a dramatic turn when they were caught up in a mountain rescue.

Jane Docherty was with her children, mother, and friends, and halfway up Mount Snowdon on May 11 when a helicopter appeared and a rescuer was winched down a rope to help a man who had fallen and suffered a head injury.

Ms Docherty, who is a relatively experienced climber having scaled Snowdon before as well as Scafell Pike, was climbing the mountain to raise money for Watford charity Peace Hospice Care.

Recalling their eventful climb on May 11, Ms Docherty said: “It was really tough. It didn’t get off to a good start after my 70-year-old mother fell but thankfully she was fine so she was able to continue.

“Then a helicopter landed very close to us and we were rushed away from the scene by paramedics. It was all a little bit scary.”

The group which also comprised off Ms Docherty’s children Danny, 9, and Isabella, 6, and her friends Chloe, Stacey, and Coral, eventually made it to the top to clear skies.

The trek took three hours and 40 minutes. After a quieter descent, the team celebrated their challenge in a hot tub.

Ms Docherty added: “I’m bursting with pride that we completed it. There were tears and hugs at the end and way more challenging than we expected, especially with two small children and my mother.”

More than £900 was raised for Peace Hospice care and Danny and Isabella and Harvey bear was there to accept the cheque.
