It’s no surprise that most properties within greater London are a little pricey.

In fact, it was ranked fifth place in the last Lloyds Bank ‘least affordable cities' review in August 2018, when a home in greater London was found to cost 10.3 times the average wage.

It comes as the review found the typical cost of buying a home in the UK has reached its least affordable level in a decade.

Andrew Mason, mortgage products director, Lloyds Bank, said: “Buying a home in UK cities remains challenging, as average house prices are outpacing wage growth.

“However, the market has seen the number of first-time buyers at a high and homeowners are still attracted to cities across the UK, in spite of rising costs.

“Over the past five years, more than half of northern cities have made the UK top 10 in house price growth, whereas over a longer period, southern cities dominate.”

According to property-price comparing website Plumpot, the average price for a property in Epping within the CM16 postcode is between £503,000 and £584,000.

The priciest area to set up home within the Epping Forest District however, is Theydon Bois, with average costs an eye-watering £830,000.

The study also revealed the average city annual earnings over the same period have risen by just 11% to £34,366.

So what can you buy if you earn the UK's average wage of about £34,366?

Don’t despair at the sky-high prices, we have a list of properties available for the price that most mortgage lenders would be prepared to give you based on that figure.

Four times your earnings brings the total mortgage amount to around £130,000 - this excludes any deposit, which many renters simply can't afford to save.
