Storm Miguel is coming our way and people are being warned to expect thunder and heavy showers.

Met Office has today (Friday, June 7) put up a yellow warning for thunderstorm.

The blustery weather is related to the storm which has killed three people after overturning a rescue ship off the French coast today.

The weather system has not been officially named in the UK. But Storm Miguel was named in Spain earlier this week after winds of up to 147km/h hit the northern part of the country.

Gone is the beautiful weather we have enjoyed over the past few days as the storm now makes its way to the country to bring about a wet and miserable weekend.

Here's what the Met Office has said:

Does the warning cover my area?

The Met Office's yellow thunderstorm warning cover much of the south part of the UK.

Watford, St Albans and Borehamwood will be affected as nearly all of Hertfordshire is under the warning zone.

Much of London - including Waltham Forest, Enfield, Barnet and Harrow - is also covered by the warning. Some parts of Epping Forest in Essex, including Chigwell, Loughton, are covered by the warning.

Epping Forest Guardian:

When should I expect the thunderstorm to hit my area?

The warning covers the time period from 2pm to 11pm today (Friday, June 7).

So it is likely that the weather will get progressively worse later this afternoon and tonight.

What should I expect?

The Met Office says that "heavy thundery showers" will break out and some of these will be quite prolonged.

A few places may see 20mm of rain falling within an hour and some spots may have as much as 30-40mm in a few hours.

There could be some spray and surface water flooding on some roads.

You should expect some travel disruption.

Mark Wilson, meteorologist at Met Office, said the storm coming to the UK will not be as strong as when it was in Europe.

Epping Forest Guardian:

He said: "The Spanish met service named the storm because it brought more severe weather across northern parts of France and other parts of Europe.

"Whereas now it’s reached the UK and the winds aren’t as strong. There are some strong winds around and but it's nowhere near as bad as across Europe.

"It’s currently a dry patch across London itself. But throughout the day, there’s increase risk of showers. There could be thunder as well.

"We’re expecting heavy showers. Overnight, it will be cloudy with longer spells of rain and overnight, we could see winds gusting at 30-35mph or so.

"If you do have a heavy thundery showering, that could bring a risk of localised flooding. With the nature of showers, it could be very hit and miss."

What is the weather like for the weekend?

Mr Wilson said: "Tomorrow isn’t looking too great. It’ll be quite cloudy, quite windy in the South still. There will be sunshine and showers for Sunday."

The Met Office's website suggests that the temperatures in Hertfordshire will range between 9°C and 17°C over the weekend. There will be rain on Saturday morning, changing to cloudy weather by late morning. And on Sunday, there will be sunny intervals changing to cloudy weather in the afternoon.

In London, the temperatures will range from 11°C to 18°C. There will be heavy rain changing to cloudy weather by late morning on Saturday. And on Sunday, there will be sunny intervals changing to cloudy weather by lunchtime.
