Our Environmental Health officers were out and about on Clean Air Day 2019 (20 June) talking to local parents and school children about air pollution.

Several schoolchildren and parents were given top tips and advice on how to reduce pollution in honour of Clean Air Day yesterday.

Environmental Officers from Epping Forest District Council paid a visit to Epping Primary School on Coronation Hill to mark the annual event across the country.

Cllr Aniket Patel, Cabinet member for commercial and regulatory services, said: “This council has a vision for becoming a low carbon district.

“Not only are we committed to reducing the environmental impact of our own vehicle fleet but also encouraging residents, businesses and colleagues to take a greener approach to activities in their business and private lives.”

Emphasis was placed on parents to avoid leaving car engines running while stationary when doing the school run and during the upcoming summer holidays.

Pupils were also given leaflets, activity packs and stickers listing the different types of pollution and to encourage them learn more about clean air.

A statement released by Epping Forest District Council said: “Air pollution is an umbrella term for lots of different types of pollution in the air. For the most part it is invisible to the naked eye, so just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there.

“We’re also doing our bit to reduce pollution in our district by trialling electric vans, over the summer we have two electric vehicles in our frontline services.

“The new vans are much more cost effective and fit with the council’s vision for a low carbon district, if successful we could well be looking to them to replace our ageing diesel fleet.”
