People are being called on to protest against the new Prime Minister as Conservative members vote for their new leader.

The People's Assembly Against Austerity is inviting people to join them outside Downing Street on the night of July 22.

Conservative party members will be selecting the new PM out of the two final candidates: Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt.

The group will be gathering from 6pm and is asking supporters to bring whistles, pots and pans, drums, sirens, loud hailers, or anything else that will create the loudest noise possible.

A rally will also take place with speakers including Laura Pidcock MP, Dan Carden MP, Richard Burgon MP, Owen Jones, Eddie Dempsey from RMT, Fran Heathcote PCS Union President, and Lindsey German from People's Assembly,

Protesters will be demanding an immediate general election and launching plans to protest at the Conservative Party national conference due to be held in Manchester later this year.

A spokesperson from the People’s Assembly said: “It’s ludicrous that less than 150,000 people from one political party get to decide who the next PM will be, especially when that party doesn’t even hold a majority in Parliament.

"Neither Hunt nor Johnson will represent the people in this country who have suffered for too long with unnecessary and cruel austerity policies. We wont let them ignore us and whoever becomes PM must be met with the greatest opposition from day 1.”

Following Theresa May's resignation, the Conservative party will be selecting a new leader. The leadership race began with 10 candidates and has been whittled down to the final two.

The new Prime Minister is expected to be announced on Tuesday, July 23.
