A school celebrated a record-breaking year of sporting achievement.

Roding Valley High School, in Loughton, came together to celebrate the sporting success of students from all year groups at its annual awards night.

Sharon Jenner, head teacher at Roding Valley High School, said: “It is such a pleasure to reward the talent and dedication of our sporting stars – the sense of achievement and teamwork that comes with sport is so important for the development of our students and it has been particularly fitting to recognise this on World Mental Health Day; we know the role that sports plays in helping us keep a happy mind and, with that, a happy school environment.”

The school’s most prestigious awards, the Moncur Award, Outstanding Achievement in PE Award, and Team of the Year Award, were won by year nine student Caleb, year 11 student

Maddie, and the under 13 girls football team respectively.

The Moncur Award was donated to the school by John Moncur, a former English footballer who has played for Tottenham Hotspur, Swindon Town and West Ham United - all three of Moncur’s sons attended Roding Valley High School.

Luke Jones, head of P.E at Roding Valley High School, said: “The Moncur Award embodies everything that P.E and sports offer: teamwork, talent and comradery – I am so pleased to present it to Caleb, a fantastic student with a bright future ahead.”

Paul Wershof, chair of governors, presented the school’s Best Team of the Year Award.

Wershof said: “When I look at the students here today, first and foremost, I see their ability to work together as a team. As a community school, this sense of teamwork runs through everything that we do and is one of the reasons that we have achieved such success, both in the classroom and on the pitch.”
