The whole of Watford ring road was at a standstill for more than two hours this evening.

Cars were bumper to bumper and queuing at every set of traffic lights on the ring road.

Between 5pm and 7pm, there was not one clear stretch of road.

After we published a story on the delays, some drivers on social media joked it would have been quicker for them to walk home.

One woman travelling via the ring road said a normal 10 minute journey took her 75 minutes.

Another driver said vehicles stuck in the tailbacks began overheating.

Traffic on the ring road has been bad for weeks, ever since new timings were introduced at Clarendon Road, but it has never been as bad in that timeframe as it has this evening.

Traffic began to build from 4pm and just got steadily worse.

By 5pm the entire ring road was gridlocked and it remained that way until after 7pm.

The queues eventually cleared by 7.30pm.

The usually quieter stretch between Clarendon Road and Waterfields Way was even struggling.

There was nothing to suggest anything out of the ordinary was causing the gridlock but the road closure in Merton Road is bringing extra traffic onto the ring road.

Temporary traffic lights in Water Lane may have affected ring road traffic too.
