No one is deceived by the calls for a second referendum on Brexit (We need a final say, Guardian, October 24). Only Remainers call for it as a means of preventing our independence, which voters chose in the referendum more than three years ago.

In some electoral systems (such as the French Presidential election) the leading candidates contest a second round. Never before has there been a call for the losing vote to get a second vote with the majority decision being discarded.

Never before except in the EU, which has forced Denmark and Ireland to “think again” when nations voted against the preferences of the political class.
